The basis for everything Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church believes is solely the Bible, which is the inspired Word of God, and the only rule for the life of faith in Jesus Christ. The Bible tells of the love of the Triune God – the Father; Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son; and the Holy Spirit. This love sent Jesus Christ to earth as a human being to suffer and die on our behalf, and then to rise again to claim victory over sin and death for us. It is only through this grace that sinful humans can be saved, and live for all eternity in heaven. There is nothing we can think or do to earn this.
We believe that there are three different ways that God brings his grace to us. We call them “Means of Grace.” Jesus Christ earned forgiveness for us on the cross. God promises to give it to us through these means – Baptism; Holy Communion; the Bible.
The only way that a person can receive God’s grace, including his forgiveness, is by faith. If a person believes that Jesus Christ died on the cross for them, then they will receive the blessings won on the cross, and given in the Means of Grace.
