THE SECOND CHURCH 1891A special congregational meeting on February 22, 1891 authorized a committee to purchase the old frame church of the English Lutheran Church of the General Synod (now St. John's, L.CA.), Dr. Brown, minister, for $200.00. The deal almost fell through. May 25 another special meeting was called at which it was reported: "They will not sell for less than $250.00; however, we are given until tomorrow morning." It was resolved immediately to meet their price and the purchase was completed. In August "the sale of the school building for $75.00" was reported and the congregation was able to proceed with the reconstruction program. The first school building was moved to the back of 1001 Second Avenue, where it was still in use as a garage as late as 1963, and the "Kirchlein" or first church became the new school building. A new foundation was constructed and the former English Lutheran church was moved to Second Avenue, occupying the place now taken by the present brick structure. |
