Luther’s Rose![]() The confession of the Triune God and His Holy Word is related to our church and brought up-to-date with three famous, distinctly Lutheran seals. The position of central importance is given LUTHER'S COAT OF ARMS, explained by Luther himself this way: "The first thing in my seal is the cross, black and on the heart, to put me in mind that faith in the crucified Christ saves us. 'With the heart man believeth unto righteousness'. Now, though the cross is black and mortifying and intended to cause pain, yet it does not change the color of the heart. It does not kill, but keeps alive. 'For the just shall live by faith.' The heart with the black cross is within a white rose, to show that faith causes joy, consolation and peace. The rose is white, not red, because white is the color of angels and saints. This rose, moreover, grows in a sky blue field, to denote that such joy in the spirit anticipates the joy of heaven. And around this field is a golden ring, to signify that Heaven's bliss is endless and more precious than all treasures. Christ our dear Lord, He will give grace unto eternal life. Amen". The blue and gold, explained by Luther, appear not only in the bands of this symbol, but in all our windows. The third predominating tone is red, a constant reminder that "the blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sins". |
