Means of Grace

Font - holy waters of Baptism Pulpit - preach the Word Altar - Christ

The all-important Means of Grace are naturally also represented in the church by the Baptismal Font, the Pulpit and Lectern, and the Altar, at which the Lord's Supper is celebrated.

The I H S on the altar is an abbreviation for the Greek word meaning "Jesus". This is the more modern form of the I H C in the window over the main entrance. Five Greek crosses are carved in the mensa or top of the altar, one of them in the exact center. Four others, somewhat smaller, are incised close to each corner of the mensa of the altar. These five Greek crosses, of very ancient tradition, represent the Five Wounds of our Lord. The two candleholders represent our Lord's words, "I am the light of the world." In their secondary sense they represent the two-fold nature of our Lord - His human and His divine nature. The carvings inserted in the pew ends (center aisle only) are merely decorative. Their design reflects the form of the chancel window.

This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one. If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son. He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. (1 John 5:6-12, NKJV).
